Troubleshoot Bluetooth pairing on your Kobo eReader

If you’re having issues pairing your Bluetooth headphones or speaker to your eReader, follow the steps below.

Note: Only these Kobo eReaders have Bluetooth compatibility:

Before you start:

Verify that your headphones or speaker has built-in Bluetooth. On most Bluetooth-enabled products, you’ll see the logo or Bluetooth icon on the device or box it came in.
Place your Bluetooth headphones or speaker close to your eReader.
Make sure your Bluetooth headphones or speaker is fully charged.
Ensure that you don't have other devices paired to your Bluetooth speaker or headphone.

Step 1: Set your Bluetooth headphones or speaker to pairing mode

Ensure your Bluetooth headphones or speaker is in pairing mode. When your headphones or speaker is in pairing mode, it will let your eReader connect to it.

For example, before you can connect your Airpods to your Kobo Sage, you’ll need to set your Airpods to pairing mode.

For support on how to set your headphones or speaker to pairing mode, follow the instructions that came with your device.
In some cases, you may have to unpair your Bluetooth headphones or speaker before you can pair it with your eReader.
If your Bluetooth headphones or speaker was previously connected to another device (for example, your laptop), you’ll have to first unpair your headphones from your device. After your headphones are unpaired, you can then set it to pairing mode so that it can connect to your eReader.

Pairing tips

Ensure that your Bluetooth headphones or speaker are:
- Nearby your eReader.
- In pairing mode.
- Fully charged.
- Away from other WiFi devices such as your cellphone or tablet.

Step 2: Scan for Bluetooth devices on your eReader

Follow the steps in this article to pair and troubleshoot bluetooth devices on your eReader:

Connect your Bluetooth headphones or speaker to your Kobo eReader

If you're still unable to see your Bluetooth device on your eReader:

Turn your eReader's Bluetooth off and then back on.
Turn your Bluetooth headphones or speaker off and then back on. Next, set it to pairing mode so that it’s discoverable by your Kobo eReader.

Rescan for available Bluetooth devices on your eReader

You can rescan for your Bluetooth devices within the audiobook player or using the Settings menu.

Rescan within the audiobook player menu

With your audiobook player open:

Tap No Bluetooth Connected near the bottom of the screen.
Tap Rescan.
Tap on the name of your Bluetooth headphones or speaker to connect to it.

Rescan within the Settings menu

Go to your Home screen.
Tap More at the bottom of the screen.
Tap Settings.
Tap Bluetooth Connection.
Beside ‘Bluetooth’, tap the circle icon to turn Bluetooth on.
After Bluetooth is enabled on your eReader, set your Bluetooth headphones or speaker to pairing mode.
Tap Rescan at the bottom of the screen.

Your Bluetooth headphones or device should appear in the list. Tap on the name of your Bluetooth headphones or speaker to connect to it.

Step 3: Remove your Bluetooth device from the connection list

If the steps above didn't work, try removing the Bluetooth headphones or speakers from your Bluetooth connection list, and then pair your Bluetooth headphones or speakers to your eReader.

Before you start:

To reduce signal interference, keep your phone and other WiFi devices away from your eReader and Bluetooth headphones or speakers.

Go to your Home screen.
Tap More at the bottom of the screen.
Tap Settings.
Tap Bluetooth connection.
Beside your Bluetooth device, tap the menu icon.
Tap Forget.
Turn off your eReader and Bluetooth headphones or speaker.

Kobo Elipsa:

Note: To turn off your eReader, press and hold the power button until you see the 'Powered off' message on the screen.
Turn on your eReader and Bluetooth headphones or speaker.
Set your headphones or speakers to Bluetooth pairing mode.
Open the Bluetooth connection menu on your eReader:
Tap Rescan at the bottom of the screen.
Your Bluetooth headphones or speakers should appear in the list.
Tap on the name of your Bluetooth headphone or speakers to connect to it.
